As the expert writer at http://acewriters.org/write-my-thesis.html I'd pount out one way to judge students' writing abilities would be to task them with editing pieces written by others. Hand each student the admission essays submitted by the prior 3 applicants and give them an hour. I thought of this after spotting several grammatical mistakes in my earlier posting, lol.
